Who is Maurice Jarre? |
|
 |
Maurice Jarre,
born in Lyon/France in 1924, is a composer whose scores has not only
heard around the world, but also "seen" it, which is a rare privilege
indeed for a composer. And in their way, his scores are every bit as
epic as the films they graces. Those like Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence Of
Arabia and Passage To India; big, bold films requiring a theme to focus
the torment and rapture, by turns, of the viewing and listening public |

Maurice Jarre |
|
|
Soon Maurice Jarre was
moving in the same circles as "angry young men" such as renowned English
playwright Harold Pinter and French-Algerian author Albert Camus. But most
telling perhaps was his association with legendary film director Jean
Cocteau. |
|
 |
He was able to
record some 40 scores before the beckoning of Hollywood proved
irresistible. The first delve into Hollywood in 1964 proved a fateful
one. In preparation for his first collaboration with British film
director David Lean, Jarre was obliged to watch a solid week's worth of
sandy waste and panoramic battle action. He then had to write the score
from scratch in six weeks. The movie was, of course, Lawrence Of
Arabia. |
|
|
The liaison
with Lean was to reward Jarre with two more gongs, for Doctor Zhivago in
1965 and for A Passage To India in 1984.
The sweeping,
powerfully romantic orchestral theme is Jarre's stock-in-trade, but he
is also at home with the tender and intimate, as in his sublime works
for Ghost (1990), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Dead Poets Society (1989) and
Fatal Attraction (1987). Ostensibly Hollywood blockbusters, they reveal
Jarre's talent for touching the soul of a film with a few simple bars.

The Message |
|
|
 |
It is perhaps the fact
that he remains, despite his long involvement with American cinema, an
"outsider" that gives him that incisive view. On the other hand, maybe it's
down to his tireless dedication to his art.
Maurice Jarre was
nominated for nine Oscars and won it in 1963, 1966 and 1985. |
